Earliest meeting: 1613 Final meeting: Monday 1st October 1877 The county Durham village of Aycliffe is situated to the south of the larger town of Newton Aycliffe. Its historic St Andrews Church once held church synods between 782 AD and 789 AD. Over 800 years later Aycliffe staged one of the earliest race meetings in the country on nearby Woodham Moor in 1613. The village has always combined their racing with Feast Week celebrations, although after 1870, when the National Hunt Committee introduced new rules governing race meetings, the Aycliffe races became point to point meetings. One such meeting on Monday 1st October 1877 featured the Aycliffe Stakes over 2 miles which was won by Mr Turner’s Dick.
